Travelogue Exploring the Exquisite Maldives
As the plane begins to descend towards the Maldives’ only international airport, Velana International Airport, the panoramic view of the endless Indian Ocean dotted with thousands of islets that form this archipelago, leaves me in absolute awe. This slice of paradise consists of twenty-six atolls and more than a thousand coral reefs and islands spread over an area of approximately 90,000 square kilometers. Let me take you on a journey exploring the exquisite Maldives.
Arrival in Paradise
After a quick speedboat transfer from the airport, I arrive at the island of Maafushi, which is a popular local island located in the South Malé Atoll. The island is home to pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. The people are friendly, and the food is nothing less than a sumptuous feast. After freshening up at the guesthouse, I set out to explore the island on foot. Walking along the white sandy beaches, I soak in the beauty of the Indian Ocean and the lush green vegetation that covers the island.
Beaches and Water Sports
The Maldives is famous for its stunning beaches. Sunbathing, snorkeling, and swimming in the crystal-clear waters are popular activities on the beaches. Maafushi also has many water sports operators, offering exciting activities such as scuba diving, parasailing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, and jet-skiing. After taking a brief introductory scuba diving lesson, I decide to go on a full-day excursion to a nearby island to explore the coral reefs and experience swimming with the colorful fishes. I come back to the island with memories of colorful fishes, clear blue waters, and an unforgettable experience.
Maldivian Cuisine
Maldivian cuisine is a fusion of Indian, Sri Lankan, and Arabian cuisines. The seafood is fresh, and the spices are aromatic and flavorful. Kurumba, a popular Maldivian dish made with coconut, tuna, and spices, is a must-try. Mas huni, a breakfast staple made with shredded tuna and grated coconut, is delicious and filling. A visit to the local fish market is a must, where you get to see a variety of fresh seafood and can select the fish of your choice to be grilled or fried.
Island-Hopping
The Maldives is famous for its many islands, and island-hopping is an excellent way to explore the region. The island of Gulhi is only a short boat ride from Maafushi. Gulhi is a tranquil island, with white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and a laid-back atmosphere. The island is ideal for relaxing and catching up on some reading while enjoying the sun and the sea breeze. The nearby Sand Bank offers a one-of-a-kind picnic experience on a sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Conclusion
The Maldives is an absolute paradise that offers a unique experience for all travelers. The beauty of the islands, the crystal-clear waters, the friendly people, and the delicious cuisine make it a must-visit destination. The Maldives truly is a tropical paradise.
